Presidio Permanente (permanent peace camp) No Dal Molin against the construction of a new US army base in Vicenza.
For three years a popular movement has been trying to stop the construction of a new US army base in a site located 1.5 km from the centre of Vicenza, a town in the Unesco heritage list. If built, Vicenza would host the biggest US base in Europe. The permanent peace camp (Presidio Permanente) is a movement but also an actual place: the campaign headquarters are located in two marquees on a field near the Dal Molin area. Over the past three years we've organised two national rallies, hundreds of events, a self-managed referendum, two Summer Festivals with concerts, non-violent direct actions and debates. The work camp takes place during the Summer Festival, which is not only a fund-raising opportunity for the movement, but also the meeting point for those who believe in peace and oppose the militarisation of their land, in Vicenza and all over Italy. Over the past years, Vicenza has become the symbol of the resistance put up by local communities against projects imposed from above and of the struggle to defend common goods. The reasons which motivate the Vicenza community are not strictly ideological: rather, they are based environmental factors (the base would be built on the water-bearing layer and on the last green area left in the city), and on ethical factors, such as the opposition to living in a territory that abets war and imperialistic policies.
WORK:Volunteers will help erecting and taking down facilities (marquees, stage, kitchen, camping site, toilets etc.), will help with design and decoration (sign posting, stage and bar design etc.), will help with kitchen and bar work, cleaning and maintenance of the festival area.
STUDY PART:Training will be given on non-violent direct action practice, conflict solving and group sharing, based on the experience of the Vicenza movement.
ACCOMODATION:The organisers will provide a camping tent pitched within the festival premises or nearby. Volunteers will bring their own sleeping bags and mats.
LANGUAGE:English and Italian
QUALIFICATIONS: Sound technicians, artistically minded people (design and decoration), kitchen staff, people with disposition to manual work.
Vicenza railway station is one hour journey from Venice railway station and two hours from Milan.
TERMINAL: The nearest recommended airports are Venice, Verona, Milan and Treviso. If you have a bicycle take it with you; however, organizers will try and supply each volunteer with a bike for the whole festival.
